The aim of this work is research the body that plays taiko - a set of drums of Japanese origin whose performance involves music and dance. Thus, the study excels at the practice and reflection of what I call "taikoist body". For this purpose, the research carries out a bibliographic and audiovisual investigation on Japanese drums from the Prehistoric (Genshi), Ancient (Kodai), Medieval (Chüsei) and Pre-modern (Kinsei) periods. In this survey, it is considered: the mythology; the use of taiko to communicate with the sacred; the drums in wars and traditional and folk arts; its recreation, in the Modern Period (Kindai), specifically after the Second World War, when the collective performance of these instruments became known as kumi-daiko. This theoretical path takes place in parallel with the narration of my participation in the group Hibiki Wadaiko, from Marília (São Paulo). Thus, I locate this art in the contemporary Brazilian context. Here, the methodology of study also incorporated the registration in work diaries, as well as interviews with some of the group members. In this sense, the work is in line with academic research efforts on Japanese culture, especially for contemporary taiko, helping to fill a bibliographic and historical gap regarding this art, and also contributing to the recognition of the importance of Japanese culture for the Brazilian culture||Mestrado||Teatro, Dança e Performance||Mestre em Artes da Cena||88882.435488/2019-01||CAPES
